Orchids captain Albert joins Souths Logan Magpies

PAPUA New Guinea Orchids captain Elsie Albert has created history as the first domestic player to crack the Queensland Rugby League women’s competition with the Souths Logan Magpies.
The rampaging prop’s remarkable rise in a short period of time has seen her secure a stint with the Brisbane-based side, which is understood to be a feeder club to the Broncos in the National Rugby League Women’s Premiership.
However, it is unclear whether Ablert has signed contract with the side. Attempts to contact PNG Rugby Football League chairman Sandis Tsaka for comment were unsuccessful.
The 23-year-old, from Pangia, Southern Highlands, played for the Vudal Cow Girls in the East New Britain Rugby League in Kokopo.
Albert was selected to represent the New Guinea Islands and was identified for the Orchids.
She captained the Orchids in their 20-16 maiden test win over England at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby in November. She also captained the side at last year’s Rugby League World Cup Nines in Sydney, Australia.
In a Facebook post, Albert said: “I settled in perfectly here. The Magpies girls and the coaching staff are amazing and welcoming and made me feel at home.
“It has been an awesome first two days since I arrived here. The Magpies have a strong family-oriented culture. “We had our first trial match yesterday (Feb 15) against the Central Queensland Capras.
“I had an awesome game playing alongside our PNG Orchids girls in the likes Amelia Kuk, Therese Aiton and Shae Yvonne Della Cruz. We won 16-4.”
