POPONDETTA Rugby League will miss out on the Southern Zone trials to be staged in Iarowari at Sogeri, Central, next week.

Financial constraints have forced the executives to cancel the trip due to limited resources but are hoping a Good Samaritan will bail them out.

It is understood that the business houses and government agencies are not supportive of human resources development through sports, in the province, a source said.

The association had put together one of the strongest teams for the trials and were confident of their chances against the top teams in the Southern region.

The final 25 players are still undergoing intensive training and looking forward to travel.

“Players and officials have not met their levy fees as imposed by the league executives,” the source said.

Last year, during the zone trials in Kwikila, Central, Popondetta was knocked out in the quarter finals by Kerema.

The team is determined to go one better, this time at Sogeri.

The executives commended Oro Governor, Gary Juffa for resurrecting and supporting the league, and its impact in developing youths in Popondetta.

The local competition continues this weekend.
