THE Oro administration has assured people that the 7.0 magnitude earthquake which hit the area last Friday had no effect on the Mt Lamington volcano.
Provincial seismologist Lawrence Baisa who had been monitoring Mt Lamington for years said the earthquake was a “separate activity”.
He told The National that Friday’s earthquake resulted from the Australian and Solomon Sea plates colliding.
He said Mt Lamington had been quiet.
The last eruption was 69 years ago which killed around 3,000 people in Northern.
The volcano is 1,680 meters above sea level north of the Owen Stanley Range.
Friday’s earthquake took place 10km offshore on the coastline of the Waria Patrol Post in Morobe and 120km north of Popondetta town.
Baisa said it had occurred offshore and the potential of a tsunami was very low.
Baisa dismissed claims of a tsunami triggered by the earthquake, saying it had occurred about 85km deep into the earth.
He explained that this would be too deep for the tsunami to occur.

  • In the last days there will be earthquakes, floods, landslide, etc….and it will just the beginning of sorrows. Wait till the gospel be preached to all the world and the end shall come. The question is what is the gospel? It is the death of Jesus Christ, His burial and His resurrection. How can we identity in ourselves being?
It is clearly written in the Book of Acts chapter 2 verses 38. Repent and be Baptized each and everyone of you for the remissions of your sins and You shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  • Repent and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit as Jesus Christ as promised.. and you will be saved from death!
