THE Oro Urban Touch Association open men’s team have taken out the Niugini Super Fours for the second straight time after defeating Ravtar 6-3 in the final.
Huon Gold defeated Kainantu’s Owan 7-6 to claim the open women’s title.
In the senior divisions, Kimbe Crow flew beat Huon Touch 6-3 (men) and Lae Corporate Touch crushed Lae Touch 9-1 (women).
Oro were fourth on the ladder and had to beat Jokers (6-4), Was Cruz (6-3) and Huon Gold (6-3) to reach the final.
The journey to defend the title was not easy but with captain David Aruha Jr at the helm, everything was under control.
Aruha’s presence on the field motivated his young charges to play well against some of the best touch players in Lae.
Aruha was named the best and fairest player in his division.
The Niugini Super Fours is into its third year and has the backing of Prima Smallgoods, Raumai18 and Paradise Beverages.
This year’s tournament attracted 37 teams, with most sides dominated by players from Lae’s three touch associations — Lae Corporate, Lae Touch and Huon Touch.
Tournament director Dennis Seeto told The National that apart from a few minor hiccups, the event went well.
He said the Niugini Super Fours had grown from strength to strength, with the same sponsors backing the tournament since its inception.
“It’s Christmas so it’s good to get teams to participate, as a lot of children are not doing anything at this time of the year,” Seeto said.
“It’s an expensive exercise for them and a lot of players make sacrifices to come.
“They look forward to the tournament each year which is a bonus.
“When Christmas comes, they always ask whether the Niugini Super Fours is on so it’s already gaining interest.”
