THE Ok Tedi Mining Ltd (OTML) has renamed its training centre the Dr Jacob Weiss Training Centre for his commitment to the mine.
OTML chief executive officer Peter Graham said the late Israeli Dr Weiss had a long association with Ok Tedi as a director and board member and had contributed a lot to OTML and it was fitting to rename the centre after him.
“We are very grateful for the commitment that he made to making Ok Tedi the successful company that Ok Tedi is today,” he said.
OTML board of directors led by chairman Sir Moi Avei welcomed the Weiss family at the centre in Tabubil on Wednesday.
“He was a great coach and mentor to many young Papua New Guineans, and in particular, the involvement Jacob had with the Bank of Papua New Guinea in the graduate programme that was run there,” he said.
“He was comfortable challenging the status quo, asking questions and proposing ideas.” Sir Moi described Dr Weiss as a close friend and his roommate at Ok Tedi. Dr Wesiss’ son and Innovative Agro Industries chairman and executive director Ilan Weiss thanked OTML for the recognition.
Ilan said education was part of Dr Weiss’ passion.
