THE sixth Wawens Cup kicked off on Friday with 40 senior and 15 junior men’s teams competing in Lae’s biggest offseason soccer tournament.
The annual week-long tournament is funded by couple Andrew and Barbara Namuesh with the support of a few corporate houses.
The senior men’s division has eight pools of five teams.
Match commissioner Alex Toki said the tournament was held during the festive season to get youths involved in soccer and refrain from illegal activities.
He said the tournament was also aimed at identifying raw talents for Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League club Morobe Wawens.
“So far, after the three days of competition, we’ve had a trouble-free weekend with families and fans congregating to support their teams,” Toki said.
“I thank the Lae Football Association, under president Roy Kamen, for being supportive of the tournament over the past six years.”
The leaders of the senior men’s pools are Poro, Bee Stones, 10 City United, Momase, Sila, Seatler, Bismark, Jen Jen (both joint leaders of Pool G), Tribes and Busy Bees (joint leaders of Pool H).
