THERE is currently no evidence linking the owner of a vehicle used in an attempted robbery and shooting in Lae last week, Acting Lae Metropolitan Commander Chris Kunyanban says.
“We have ascertained facts surrounding the issue of his (vehicle owner) involvement and the people who hired the vehicle have been questioned regarding the incident,” he said.
Kunyanban said suspects in the robbery were yet to be arrested, however, their identities had been established and the investigation was ongoing.
The incident happened at Montoro Street where a shop manager for Seeto Kui was shot in the left arm by robbers and a police officer was shot in the shoulder while in pursuit of the robbers.
Kunyanban said the law and order situation in Lae was manageable with mostly minor offences or non-violent crimes being reported.
“Over the past few days, we’ve seen an increase in drinking offences and sexual crimes against underage girls,” he said.
“Periods such as Christmas and New Year attract opportunists who commit both serious and minor offences so everyone must be on the lookout for that to help police.”
Kunyanban said the operation order for the festive period had been given and Lae police would start operations on Dec 23.
