THE parents of a child whose body has disappeared from the Modilon General Hospital morgue in Madang are calling on the management to locate the body. The parents and relatives of 18-month-old Betty Kimin said they wanted to give her a decent funeral.
Kimin died of diarrhoea last Thursday and was taken to the morgue the following day.
Her parents returned to morgue on Monday to collect the body for burial at the town cemetery but could not find their child’s body despite searching the morgue four times. The child’s grandfather, Nick Gendi said they had raised the matter with two morgue attendants and hospital administration. He said the morgue registry said no body had been removed over the weekend but the administration registry showed a body being removed on Sunday. After a cross check, the morgue attendants said while attending to the arrival of another body on Sunday, some people drove in on a maroon Land Cruiser and took a body without notifying them.
The morgue attendant told the child’s relatives to resolve their family differences, if any, then return and search again. “We return yesterday and search for the fifth time and couldn’t locate it. The location we placed Betty was replaced with an adult male corpse. We need Betty’s body to accord her a decent burial,” Gendi said.
