Parents urged to educate children

PARENTS must educate their children well to prevent violence, a doctor says.
Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) head of obstetrics and gynaecology Prof Glen Mola said “when we talk about violence, we must look back at ourselves”.
He said people needed to look at their family and assess it.
“There has to be respect in the family so that the children can grow up to be good citizens with an understanding of how men and women can live harmoniously together,” he said.
“Sending a man to prison after he abused or killed a woman does not solve the problem.
“Proper rearing of the children is important.”
Prof Mola said parents should be quick to discipline their children if they showed some form of aggression or used their fists on others.
He said the fight to address violence should start at home.
Sr Jennifer Pyakalyia said many women lost their lives because of the lack of respect at home.
She said men must respect and understand women.
“We invite all the men to accompany their wives to the labour ward here at PMGH,” she said.
“Men need to witness the pain a woman endures during childbirth.
“That will change the way they treat the mother of their children.”
