HUNDREDS of Catholics gathered at the Yaumanda Parish in Kompiam-Ambum district in Enga to celebrate the ‘Divine Mercy’ programme for this year.
Parish priest of Keman and Peperes Fr Aaron Sakan, when opening the programme, reminded parishioners to remember and reflect on the mercy of God upon his people.
Sakan said the celebration of Divine Mercy was a special programme on the church’s calendar.
“We are all sinners one way or the other yet God continues to forgive us because our good Lord is so forgiving and full of mercy,” Sakan said.
He said the church preached divine mercy in other parts of the province and they witnessed so many great miracles happening and seen the hands of God at work.
“When the Divine Mercy programme was launched in Kandep, we witnessed two warring tribes reconcile,” he said.
Sakan said despite the number of people killed on both sides and properties destroyed, the two warring tribes made peace.
Fr Eusebius Peter said they have to continue to cherish the love and mercy of God because it was through God’s mercy that they lived in peace and harmony in communities.
Peter said even though they did not have any police presence in the district where problems like tribal fights were prevalent; the people continued to live in peace.
“It’s because for the love of God on us that makes the people enjoy peace in our respective communities and to live in peace.”
He said it was through his mercy that they continued to live in peace and at the same time benefit from good health and education services provided by the church in rural communities where government services hardly reached them.
