THE Port Moresby Nature Park celebrated World Wildlife Day with a green frog release ceremony on Friday.
Park chief executive officer Dr Adrian Fowler said: “We are celebrating the strong partnerships with other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) around the world such as America’s Association of Zoos and Aquariums Safe campaign, which stand for the saving animals from extinction programme, which helps us in conserving Papua New Guinea’s unique tree kangaroos.”
Fowler said the country had some of the most eye-catching and unique wildlife in the world.
He also acknowledged the NGOs for their partnership with the park.
Wildlife officer Ryan Reuma, who specialises in looking after frogs, snakes and lizards at the park released five rainforest frogs that were bred and looked after by the park.
“Green frogs are an excellent indicator of the health of the environment,” he said.
Reuma said the country had 350 species of frogs which made up almost five per cent of the world’s frog population.
“Our work involves caring for and breeding these beautiful animals in the park,” Reuma said.
“Our work also involves educating the public of the national treasures.”
