Parkop calls for forced repatriation

NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop says people from other provinces fighting and killing each other in the city should be forced to go home and banned from coming back.
He was responding to fights erupting in the city resulting in the death of three men in a drug deal that went wrong at 2-Mile in Moresby South.
Parkop stopped short of calling for the Vagrancy Act to be enforced.
He told The National that the problem would not be solved by a “silver spoon”.
“They have no place for it in the city which belongs to all our people to live in respect and harmony with each other,” he said.
“It’s also a city we share with the Motu Koitabu people whose culture is one of respect and peace.
“Everyone who lives here must follow those values.
“Otherwise they should go back (to where they came from).
“Everyone is fed up with people who can’t respect these fundamental principles and values and continue to hate and inflict violence and death on others on the basis of ethnic differences or bias.
“The time has come to ban such people from coming to live in our national capital.”
He said many ethnic groups in the city have learned to peacefully co-exist.

  • Thank you Governor Parkop for the call. Please enforce the vagrancy Act now!! The peace loving Motukoitabuans as well as those others who wish to live a good peaceful life in a City like Port Moresby must be respected. Send those people from other provinces who are unemployed back to their home provinces and towns. Theres plenty to do back at their own provinces.

Let the Gateway City to the country be lived the way All likeminded citizens as well as the Diplomatic World do proper business for the Nation as a Whole. Please Papuan Region MP’s and NCDC MP’s, let us work together to make this City a liveable city of the early 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.

    God Bless Papua New Guinea.

  • Mr Governor, the only solution to this ongoing issue between ethnic groups is Vagrancy Act.
If we can’t control the movement of people coming to the city by now, then the city will face major issues in the future once the city is over populated. Issues like unemployment, housing, law and order, and others.
So it is better the parliament revisit the Vagrancy Act.

  • Those who cannot respect the laws of this country, and cannot even respect the fellow citizens of this nation living in towns and cities, must be repatriated back to where they come from. In their own little closets, they can do as they please and enjoy themselves whatever way they can. This must not be allowed in all our towns and cities. Over to you, elected leaders, to make the call.

  • NCDC should establish a Taskforce to purposely deal with ethnic clashes in the city so whoever is involved is immediately repatriated and never to return. The same taskforce should Monitor influx of unnecessary people travelling into the city. This in turn will give rise to the Vagrabcy Act to give it Teeth to bite. Enough is enough.

  • I really agree with the idea…just enforce the vagrancy act..thank you parkop for this idea because as you have said, there is no solution to such problem so vagrancy act is the only way..

  • Unemployment and problems will rise up in some 10 to 20 years to time and its going to be very hard for us to control. The population is increasing every year while jobs remain same in numbers.
Government has to think and plan ahead and do something to control this growing population.Sending back home is not the solution to solve this problem. We send our kids to school to get something at the end of the school. If they can not find the jobs, they start doing other things like drug deals.I believe if our good government set up more factories that will create more jobs and everyone has something to do and keep them selves busy but other wise this will continue and NCD will become battle field for Hela, Engans and Goilalans

  • Settlements are a major liability to society and they should be eradicated at all costs Firstly, they contribute to social issues which is a cost to the government. It is a breeding place for criminals and for sale and consumption of illicit drugs. Secondly they do not pay for services such as water, sewage, electricity and land taxes. Tbey are a health hazard with no proper sanitation facilities. Another cost to the government in terms of health bourne diseases. Thirdly, they contribute to land grabbing issues which is a major concern around PNG especially in NCD. They build their houses wherever they can, which contributes to no proper planning by government authorities. Fourthly, they have brought the village life into the city such as loitering and tribal fights. Lastly, potential politicians should not use them for vote buying during election time which is the main reason for their existence. The classic example is the 5mile ridge settlement which was established by the late David Unagi. He brought his relatives and settled them there so that they voted for him during the election back in the 1980s. Today the youth in that area contribute to the law and order issues around Gordon’s residential suburb. NCDC should vigorously pursue the settlement to surburd concept so everyone will pay taxes to live in the city. Additionally, the government should enforce the vagrancy laws which will bring order back to the city and people will respect each other and live in harmony.
