NCD Governor Powes Parkop yesterday launched a weeklong festival to mark the country’s 38th Independence anniversary.

Students from Badihagwa Secondary School came dressed in their traditional contumes, representing the 22 provinces, to start the celebrations at the Jack Pidik Park in Boroko.

Parkop urged city residents to celebrate the anniversary in peace.

“We all must showcase the spirit of Independence and it starts here in Port Moresby,” he said.

“This is where everyone congregates and we must showcase the potential gradually we are getting there but we must improve.

“People must get into the spirit of the national day.  It is an important time to remember and ponder where we are and the next direction to take.

“There will be celebrations at the Jack Pidik Park, Ela Beach and UPNG so residents come and celebrate.”
