THE Motu-Koita Assembly and the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) launched the Vanagi Heau Helulu Canoe Race Association competition at Ela Beach on Saturday.
The launching brought together six participating canoes from the Motu-Koitabu area for the association’s inaugural race outside Apec Haus.
NCD Governor Powes Parkop, who launched competition, was pleased with the association’s initiative in honouring their tradition.
“The sea is our tradition, it’s our life. It’s important we recognise and keep this tradition,” Parkop said.
“This race can be a pathway for our young people coming to compete, coming to honour our tradition.”
Assembly chairman and Deputy Governor Dadi Toka Jr encouraged Motu and Koitabu people to participate in such initiatives as it had the potential to grow.
“It’s very important that this city continues to acknowledge the traditional landowners of Port Moresby,” Toka said.
“This is the start of something that I would like to see grow.
“I’m sure that over the years, it will leave a big impact on our community.”
Races will be held every fortnight Saturday, starting at 9am.
Saturday’s race saw Mummy Dearest finish first with 3 prince and Hanua Mero finishing second and third respectively.
Penekovu, Somanada and Moale finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
The final will be held during the Hiri Moale Festival on Sept 21.
