SCHOOLS in Port Moresby will have one board per district as part of Governor Powes Parkop’s plan in taking over of education service in the National Capital District.
He told The National that the chair of those boards would make up the NCD education board.
“We will have only four school boards to manage all the schools in NCD,” he said.
Parkop said all schools could still have parents and citizens (P&C) groups.
“We have to professionalise and have better management of schools rather than having each school have their own board.
“Our main goal is to improve the teaching and learning environment,” he said.
“That is not going to be easy because it requires us to improve the infrastructure, look at the ratio between students and staff and look at how we can have more space for children in our schools.
“We also want to ensure that everybody gets a grade 12 education and how to achieve that.
“We will be working on bringing our education system in the city into the digital age.”
Parkop made these remarks when commenting on the recent National Executive Council decision to transfer the control of education services in NCD from the Education Department to NCD commission.
“Our goal is to re-organise the management of schools in NCD.”
He said a memorandum of agreement would soon be signed between NCD and the Education Department to transfer all staff and functions.
“I have spoken to Education Minister Joseph Yopyyopy and we will work out a schedule for a formal handover,” Parkop said.
Yopyyopy said a formal handover ceremony would be announced soon.
“We are currently finalising our instruments for the handover,” he said.

  • How can 4 school boards manage over schools in a city of nearly 1 million people? Think again governor.
