CLEANING and disposing of rubbish as part of the beautification project for National Capital District Commission (NCDC) can be a costly exercise.
According to NCD Governor Powes Parkop the commission spends around K18 million a year alone on cleaning rubbish in the nation’s capital.
“We spend a lot of money both on domestic and industrial waste. The commission spent almost K1.5 million a month to clean rubbish in our city.
“The cost of keeping the streets clean is about K500,000 a month and that is a lot of money that can be saved to be used somewhere else,” Parkop said.
But for us at NCDC, we spend a lot of money because of so much litter and rubbish, he said.
Every month NCDC spends almost K1.5 million to clean the rubbish in our city, from domestic and industrial to street rubbish.
On the street it costs a lot of money, maybe between K400,000 and K500,000 a month.
Parkop said that amount of money could be saved to be used somewhere else if there was less rubbish thrown carelessly into the streets.
The governor said everyone needed to understand that it costs a lot to keep the city clean and people should start taking some responsibility by disposing of their rubbish properly and responsibly.
“All of us, no matter who we are, must exercise some responsibility in looking after our city.
Parkop said many city people disposed of their litter anywhere with the thought that that it was NCDC’s job to pick up their rubbish and continue to keep the city clean.
He said that city residents must change that way of thinking.
“It is our city so let us keep it clean,” Parkop said.
