SCHOOL students in the National Capital District had an opportunity to observe the final school-themed programme of the year called “Beast and Bites” at the Port Moresby Nature Park.
It will run for the next three weeks. It is designed to educate and inspire young people to be guardians of PNG’s unique natural environment and culture.
The programme is supported by ExxonMobil, NCDC, Zoos Victoria, The National, Ela Motors and the United Nations Development Programme. Children aged between 5 and 12 learn about the most misunderstood wildlife such as insects, spiders, snakes and bats through interactive learning, discussions and practical lessons.
Park general manager Michelle McGeorge said since the introduction of the school’s excursion programme in 2013, more than 90,000 students had accessed the programme. This year alone, more than 24,000 are expected to attend the park’s education programmes.
“It is always a delight to see young faces light up when they come to the park to learn about animals and plants.
“We have more than 550 unique native animals at the park and run educational programmes for each grade level as well as our popular themed programmes.”
The Nature Park’s education department developed the programmes to support the education curriculum for early learners and middle schoolers and support teachers in their lesson plans and curriculum outcomes.
Beasts with Bite is exclusive for schools.
