MEMBERS of a club gathered for lunch yesterday for two reasons – to watch the Melbourne Cup and raise funds for projects that will benefit the people.
The Rotary Club of Boroko hosted the function at the Hilton Hotel in Port Moresby to raise funds for cervical cancer prevention, health and education supplies, and a water and sanitation project at Sogeri and Iarowari.
Club president Sanjay Shah said they involved themselves in projects which would make a difference in the lives of people.
The club’s theme this year is “Rotary connecting to community”.
The club is therefore delivering projects such as clean water, providing a hygiene environment, education and health facilities in areas where they are not available.
One of the projects they were involved in was the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination of cervical cancer.
It was one of the reasons behind the fundraising yesterday.
“We have 14 Rotary clubs in PNG and we step up to make a difference in building a new and better generation with hygiene conditions, basic health and education facilities with the help of Rotary International,” Shah said.
He said the club had been involved in the eradication of polio and fighting malaria. More than 10,000 mosquito nets have been distributed around PNG and the Pacific islands.
Rotary governor Darryl Iseppi said he had been visiting PNG for 34 years and was amazed by the work club members were involved in.
He said the total value of projects they were involved in was more than US$5 million (K16.9mil).
