Parliament team trains officials

Provincial and local level government members in Gulf received training on meeting procedures last week from the National Parliamentary Services.
Acting deputy clerk Basil Kumbaliagen said it was important that assemblies and the LLG members knew the “meeting processes and procedures well”.
The workshop was organised by Gulf Governor Chris Haiveta at Uaripi village.
It included a mock assembly meeting supervised by the officers so that the members could understand the processes and procedures in conducting meetings, debates, presentation of bills to passing of laws.
“You must read and understand the Standing Orders in your five-year term in office because you will be deliberating on many important issues or businesses,” Kambuliagen said.
“Knowing and following right procedures and processes will guide you to seeing a successful outcome because this is the only legal process.”
He suggested that provincial governments should work with the Parliamentary Services on training or on-the-job experience for the members to understand the Standing Orders.
“Important decisions and passing laws at your level goes through similar processes and procedures as the Parliament. Therefore such knowledge and understanding is important to you as leaders to adhere to, to reach achievable outcomes,” Kumbaliagen said.
Most of the LLG members came from remote wards by plane and boats to Kerema and Uaripi village.
Havieta said it was time for the province “to work and move together from the families, wards and the districts up”.
