THE National Fisheries Authority (NFA) and the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) will work together to analyse fisheries in East and West Sepik.
They agreed that the NFA will conduct a value chain analysis of the aquaculture, riverine and coastal fisheries sub sectors in the region.
NFA deputy managing director Noan Parkop said fisheries already had personnel under the European Union €85million (K366mil) funded support to rural entrepreneurship, investment and trade programme in the Sepiks.
FAO head of programmes Mirriam Mondia said the programme was a value chain development one focused on vanilla, cocoa and fisheries.
“For the FAO, fisheries value chain, is different from cocoa and vanilla because not only the programme is interested in helping farmers to enhance their production, to generate income but also try to focus on improving food and nutrition security in East and West Sepik which were identified as the second region highest in malnutrition in the country and I think that is one of the specific issues that FAO is also focusing on,” she said.
