Minister for Agriculture and Livestock John Simon visited East New Britain last Thursday to launch the copra price support programme in Kokopo.
The price support programme is a Government initiative.
Simon said the copra process, starting from the field to when it is sold, was not easy with farmers only getting K50 or K60.
“I have experienced this so I decided that things should change,” he said.
“This is for our farmers.”
The Government will give K4 million to support the programme and bring the door price to the farm gate by adding the subsidy to every kilogram so that all copra buyers will pay K2 per kilogram and no less. Simon said the same would be done for cocoa and coffee.
“How do we encourage and our farmers?
“I’m interested in our farmers.
“These are the very people we should assist.”
