NEW Ireland’s rugby league fraternity has partnered community leaders to help ease tensions in Kavieng following the killing of two men over the weekend, according to an official.
Pawa-Rawal club spokesman Balaks Tasa said the situation made it impossible to return, however, the team were willing to assist in the peace-making process.
“We can’t pass through the highway because of the uncertainty of the situation on the ground,” Tasa said.
Meanwhile, team members who attended last weekend’s New Ireland Nines rugby league tournament in Konos are still awaiting clearance into Kavieng.
They are residents of Pawa Haus and Rawal of ward one in the Kavieng Urban local-level government area.
Madak Rugby League development officer Ezekiel Paska said the players were safe and well taken care of.
“They can stay here as long as they want until they are assured of their safety,” he said.
“The Kavieng Rugby League is urging leaders of local communities to consider public safety as we take calculated action towards reaching a compromise,” he said.
“We are so concerned about our innocent mothers and sisters at Pawa Haus and Rawal.
“We are ready to work with all our community leaders and the police in Kavieng to be part of the solution. We have people who are affected by the fight.”
