Paying taxes

Letters

I WANT to provoke discussion on what is a sound public policy as opposed to self-serving policies designed to squeeze more tax out of the consumers and corporate bodies in order to turn the monstrous wheels of the three-tier government system.
Let’s take a hypothetical case: If everyone decides not to pay any tax and close shop for a year, what will happen to the government’s budget and its so-called service delivery programmes.
It will also be scaled down and come to a standstill.
If the government tries to squeeze more and more from taxpayers, less net taxes will be collected in subsequent years because everyone has reduced operation and staff or closed doors.
When a new policy is introduced, proper modeling is needed to test different scenarios with proper regression analysis.
The current government seems to run out of ideas to generate enough revenue for the whole government machinery to function.
It has failed to define the role of the State and take a drastic move to cut unnecessary functions and job for the boys.
It has tried to raid the funds of statutory bodies.
