Penalise rogue road safety officers

Letters

ON Wednesday a road check was done by road safety officers at Pilag and UPNG.
The officers did a usual check on unregistered vehicles and expired safety stickers as part of their job.
Apprehending those who were not following the rules and regulation of the Road Traffic Authority is commendable and appreciated.
What caused curiosity about the action of some officers is that there were two cabs that were driven by the owners who realised the road checks stopped their car on the bus stop and prior to the check and left their car without locking the car door.
Another group of road safety officers on their way to assist their colleagues noticed the two cars and decided to stop and check as they suspected the owners may have escaped.
While doing the inspection, they could not locate the owners so one of the officers unscrewed the nuts and removed the front and back plate number leaving the cars without their registration plates.
What infuriated some of us who watched them was that the officers displayed an unethical behaviour by the way they acted to remove the plates.
We thought the best way would be to tow the car to the police station or their office rather than removing the plates.
Can the Road Transport Authority chief executive officer Nelson Terema investigate this and penalise your officers.
There are proper ways to deal with such scenarios rather than applying such unacceptable behaviour.
We cannot continue to entertain this nonsense.

  • you can blame the Officers. what i see from time to time is both parties do not communicate well. Misunderstanding between both parties. Drivers are careless so are the officers. full stop.

As for we PNGians, we do not follow traffic rules and everybody knows that. There are drivers without license driving and vehicles without permits on the road. if only we could follow simple rules and regulations, then there shouldn’t be anything such as what is stated in this article be happening…
