PEOPLE living in maritime districts have been encouraged to take up sea cucumber farming.
Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Dr Tom Lino said an agreement had been signed with the Chinese government to buy the sea product.
“Previously we go through Singapore and Hong Kong, but (now) we will go direct to China,” he said.
Lino gave K500,000 from the Government to support the Namatanai sea cucumber farming.
“Kavieng has the potential,” he said.
“We have already created the market.
“It is up to the people to tell us what they want to do and we will ensure the product is sold.”
The agreement allows the inspection, quarantine and veterinary sanitary requirements for wild marine fishing aquatic products and protocol on quarantine and hygiene requirement for edible aquatic animals.
“We have direct access and I want to challenge the people in maritime provinces to choose what you want to do and we will support you (financially),” he said.
