PEOPLE of the Salamaua local level government in Huon Gulf, Morobe have been told that they will also benefit from the Wafi-Golpu project.
Huon Gulf MP Ross Seymour assured them during the Conservation and Environment Protective Authority (Cepa) awareness on deep sea tailings placement at Buakap village last week.
Villagers were concerned that they would miss on the benefits and wanted to firm an association to represent them.
Seymour said the people needed to organise themselves into forming an association.
“It’s not an issue as the Cepa team and Minister for Environment and Conservation and Climate Change Wera Mori are here to hear from you and assist in the best possible way so that we all can participate in the project,” he said.
“You said you will miss out. It is not true. You are part of the package – Wampar, Salamaua and the Morobe LLGs.”
The project involves the districts of Bulolo, Huon Gulf and Lae.

  • The MP is attending an awareness meeting about Deep Sea tailings. Yet his statement sounds as if whatever the people say the project is going ahead. It will add more waste to the filth from Ramu project which also failed to listen to concerns of the local people.
Did the eminent scientists when considering Ramu and now for Wafi Golpu mine take into account the fact there would be two mines dumping into same ocean area.

  • Why can’t CEPA make it compulsory that all Mine Operators have tailings dams. For all operations that discharge into the sea and rivers. Mine Operators are saving huge here. From all the Gold sales the Government and Landowners only get less than 5% some 2%. Can these mine operators use another 2% of the sales to construct and operate tailings dams?? We can’t be “over exploited” and “contaminated ” Let’s rewrite these Environmental and Mining Acts to get the justice we deserve. We are no longer people who gave land to colonizers for a bush knife and packet of salt.
