People told to stay safe when travelling this festive season

TRANSPORT Minister Westly Nukundj has called on the people to be safety-conscious when travelling during the Christmas and New Year period.
Nukundj, pictured, warned people to avoid overloading vehicles, speeding excessively and driving or travelling under the influence of alcohol.
“I urge all travelling home for their holidays to exercise great care at all times,” he said.
“Our seas are rough at this time of the year, our roads are wet and heavy flooding normally washes away parts of roads and bridges.
“Our own behaviour may also be a threat to ourselves and our loved ones. So take extra care.”
Nukundj said people often under the influence of alcohol drive too fast, causing road accidents.
He warned people to be especially careful with the loads they carry, with the way they load vehicles and with speeding.
“Overloading, uneven spread of load and speeding are the greatest cause of road accidents,” he said.
“You must never carry more than the recommended maximum weight for each vehicle.”
