PETE’S PUNCHLINE

Sports

  • Will Sonny Bill Williams make a difference at the Sydney Roosters? I’m going to take the middle road and say he won’t have as big an influence as some may think. But that doesn’t mean the NRL defending champions will be any less potent. The Chooks will go deep in the finals, without a doubt.
  • Good to see Capital Rugby looking to get their competition underway this month. Not sure about NCD Rugby but if they are as well then kudos to them too. Salute to PJ and Sailosi. Keep up the good work genetlemen.
  • So fans in Goroka decided to burn down property belonging to the NSI over the weekend because …That person who set the kunai house on fire is a pathetic excuse for a fan while those who stood by and did nothing to stop him or her should be ashamed of themselves. Either way, Goroka and the Lahanis had their reputations tarnished by the actions of a few selfish people.
  • Was it because their team was getting beaten easily by the Lae Tigers or that they couldn’t get into the venue to see the game because of Covid-19 measures? Didn’t these fools realise that they were destroying property in their own town!
  • Can we see more bombs being put up on the 5th tackle in the Digicel Cup? And how about some cross field bombs for the wingers?
  • Who else thinks Digicel Cup refs are a little clueless at times.
  • So the Broncos all but sacked Tevita Pangai Jr for a Covid-19 bubble violation and now they’ve decided to keep him, under strict conditions, of course. Yawn. This house of cards is going to continue to crumble. Expect several resignations from the Broncos board including the CEO over the next six months.
  • A friend called me out on my criticism of NBA’s stance over the recent shooting of a black man in Wisconsin. I appreciate that they (NBA officials/coaches/players) have a right to air their concerns. At the end of the day, let’s all be nicer to each other, treat each other with respect and get on with the game.
  • While we’re on the NBA. The Raptors who I tipped to win the East got shutdown 112-94 by the Celtics in the opener of their conference semifinal series. That must’ve been one hell of a defensive effort by Boston. Still picking the Raptors to come good down the stretch.
  • Thought Justin Olam’s post-try salute on Sunday to Black Panther Chadwick Boseman was a nice touch.
  • English Premier League fans are excited about the prospect that Lionel Messi could leave Barcelona for the United Kingdom. Imagine if the Argentine went to Manchester United!
