Tarum happy with performance despite loss

PORT Moresby Vipers coach Leonard Tarum says he is happy with his side’s performance despite their 10-14 loss to the Rabaul Gurias in round eight of the Digicel Cup on Sunday.
He said the margin of the scoreline reflected a high-quality game between the two sides, given their form and the number of experienced campaigners who took the field at Sir John Guise Stadium.
“It was a high-intensity game and I am pleased with our performance despite the loss,” Tarum said.
“To be honest, I thought the Gurias deserved the win.
“They remained composed in attack and despite trailing, they hung on to snatch victory.
“We were on the front foot and we had them pinned in some stages of the game.
“But poor options by our spine cost us as we did not capitalise on our opportunities.
“The basics like decision-making in such moments can have an impact on the outcome and that’s what happened. But all in all, it was an even clash in the middle and I am satisfied with my players’ efforts.
“I thought we gave our best.”
Tarum said the result provided a reality check before the finals and his men would have to improve in attack and defence with three rounds of the regular season left.
He said the return of injured pair Shane Nigel and Stargroth Amean would depend on the doctor’s assessment and how fast they could recover before the finals.
“They are quality players so we’d like to have them back as soon as possible,” Tarum said.
