PETE’S PUNCHLINE

Sports

  • Good to hear Hunters players will get some educational opportunities while they’re down in Queensland this year. Study hard, train hard and play hard. The result, as they say, will take care of itself.
  • Laiwaden Oval for Madang teams, for soccer matches at least, must be what like Kalabond Oval in Kokopo is for the Gurias. Bara FC, a pretty decent side in the WNSL Northern Conference, were beaten 2-1 by locals Tusbab Laidamon last week and now another Lae team, Poro, are travelling to Madang to face the music. Poro are no slouches but I sense an upset in the making.
  • Did you know that the National Softball Federation is now known as the National Softball and Baseball Federation. Hopefully, a baseball comp starts at some point.
  • After that high-scoring 113-125 mishap against the Cavs last week and all the criticism about their non-existent defence that followed, the Nets went out with the ear plugs and knocked off the Heat 128-124 next game and then locked out Miami again 95-87 in the next game (don’t ask me why they played Miami in consecutive fixtures). I guess they’re trying to show everyone they can play both sides of the court.
  • Did I not say Frank Lamaprd was on his last legs two weeks ago? See ya, Frankie.
  • Benji the Bunny! Sounds OK to me. He might get a run come Origin time and is a more than useful sub if one of Reynolds or Walker pulls a hammy, strains a calf or suffers some micro tear during the course of the season. Hey that’s 324 games worth of NRL experience coming cheap as. Why not. Thanks Wayne. – PGTP ([email protected])
