PETE’S PUNCHLINE

Sports

  • Aaaaaargh! The Hunters have been delayed yet again. Actually, not really surprised because isn’t the quarantine time supposed to be 14 days? So why did they say that the team would only be delayed by seven days after that inconclusive result came back?
  • Look, I’m all for praising the team and standing in solidarity when they aren’t doing well. But a crap performance is a crap performance and needs to be called out. Also, the appeal to Hunters fans and Papua New Guineans not to lambast the players or to go easy on them on social media isn’t something I’d be doing. Let the fans express themselves. Granted a few of them (fans) are morons and trolls, the vast majority are good and loyal. But we all know that fans are fickle and shoot from the hip most of the time — they’re still fans and still in your corner. Take the good with the bad. That’s life. This ain’t a perfect world.
  • Also, if a Hunters player gets upset because of what he reads on social media about himself then that guy needs to get hard. Oh poor widul babee… Don’t go on social media. Do what Kawhi Leonard in the NBA does – that brother don’t give a damn about the fools on social media or in the media. I don’t mind criticism and comments about a player so long as its based on what he does (or fails to do) on the field. It shouldn’t be personal or about his family or personal life. That’s below the belt and not on.
  • This first season of the WNSL has exposed the lack of depth in the women’s game, especially in the Southern Conference. How do I know? Those score lines. 19-0 is an indictment on the quality of the competition. I’m sure things will get better but something needs to be done about these blow-outs. There is a big gap between the elite players/teams and the rest. Hopefully, the WNSL organisers are taking note of this and working out policies and plans to ensure the quality and experience is spread so we can have competitive fixtures.
  • Midtjylland. First time I saw that I thought it was some kind of spelling error. But it’s actually a club in the Danish Superliga.
  • Come on England. Win a test in style and then getting your a#$ handed to you in the next game is a tad inconsistent, don’t you think?
  • KD comes back and the Nets lord it over the Warriors 134-117. So Brooklyn really is a one-man team. Oh, I’m sorry, you thought Harden and Kyrie could do this on their own? Don’t be silly.
  • At least Klopp is man enough to admit his team has no chance now.
  • PNGNRLC, just put them all in — Warriors, Lagatois and Pride — and tell the comp that the bottom three will be dropped at season’s end. – PGTP ([email protected])
