Philippines sees three year high in PNG students

 THE number of PNG students applying for study in the Philippines remained high for three years in a row, according to Paradise International Education Consultancy, an education placement organisation based in Cebu City, Philippines.

Since 2012, more than 480 PNG students have chosen the Philippines for their university studies in degree programmes in accountancy, architecture, business, computer studies, economics, engineering, and many others. 

Some of these students are taking short courses and pilot license training.

More students have sent their applications to register in universities this November. 

This is the last intake in the country in two years due to a change in the curriculum. 

Requirements include scans of school documents, passport and police clearance.

“The quality of education in Cebu is world-class,” Jensen Chow, the executive consultant of PIEC, said. 

“The majority of the imported skilled labour in PNG comes from Philippines so Papua New Guineans have seen the quality of the output of the Filipino education system.” 

Foreign students studying in the Philippines include South Koreans, Chinese, Americans, Nepalese, Indians, Nigerians and many others. 

The University of Southern Philippines Foundation, one of the institutions in Cebu, PNG students make up the high number of foreign population. 

Other universities that enroll PNG students were: University of San Carlos, University of Cebu, Indiana Aerospace University, Southwestern University, Cebu Doctor’s University, Silliman University, St Louis University, Palawan State University and Benedicto College. 

“I know that students from here need to be successful. I envision PIEC to play a large role in educating our nation and helping our youth achieve their study goals,” Chow said.
