Phoenix up for Telikom challenge

PHOENIX are aiming to end Telikom’s winning streak when both sides meet in the women’s premier division of the National Capital District Volleyball Association competition at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre tomorrow.
Fifth-ranked Phoenix will aim for their third win of the season when they face the competition leaders, but it will be huge task for the Linda Simoi-coached side.
“We did very well last week and the girls are pumped for the big game against Telikom,” Simoi said told The National earlier this week.
Following Phoenix’s 3-0 victory over Vailima last week, she is confident that the team would be competitive against Telikom.
Simoi said she would field a strong line-up in a bid to contain Telikom’s attack in the round-seven fixture.
“It’s going to be a tough hurdle, but I’m confident in my team, given their strong performance last week,” she said.
“Our line-up usually depends on whoever shows up for training.
“This time, we will select a strong team in attack and defence.”
Phoenix have being inconsistent in their past six games, winning only two matches.
Despite sitting in the bottom half of the ladder ahead of Vailima (seventh) and Snipers (sixth), Simoi believes Phoenix are gaining momentum.
She said communication and discipline would be crucial against the frontrunners.
“We really need to communicate well to control the match,” Simoi said.
“Playing against an experienced team like Telikom, we will need to be on our game.”
