FULLBACK Dickson Pipi bagged the man of the match award after he helped Mendi Muruks edge Hela Wigmen 18-16 in the Digicel Cup in Port Moresby on Sunday.
Pipi’s defensive leadership proved crucial when the Muruks were trailing 12-16 in the second half of the round-seven clash at the Oil Search National Football Stadium.
The visitors denied the Kroton-sponsored Wigmen from scoring more points and grabbed a late converted try through winger Leon Undupia to snatch an 18-16 win.
“We came out to play in the first 20 minutes but couldn’t continue the momentum in the next 20 due to poor ball security,” Pipi said.
“Our coach told us to complete our sets and get the basics right. That was what we based our second half on.”
Pipi’s strong running game alongside rookie halfback Josiah Jimmy saw crucial metres gained against the reigning premiers with the fullback noting a strong finish.
“This was Josiah’s second game,” he said.
“He has been getting the hang of semi-professional rugby league.
“He will only improve as the season progresses.
“Collectively, we still have a lot of areas to work on.
“Hopefully, we can record more wins heading into the finals.
“But the win over the Wigmen was great as they are a tough side under coach Charlie Wabo.”
Meanwhile, Muruks coach Roderick Puname pointed out a few missed opportunities in the backline with Jimmy and Pipi yet to fully develop their combination.
But the former SP Hunters assistant coach said he was happy with the overall performance of his men.
