Pirates running amok in Milne Bay waters

Letters

I WRITE in response to an article, “Pirates Rob Passengers” (The National, July 20).
Unfortunately for the people of Milne Bay, this is a never-ending story.
Piracy in Milne Bay waters has increased dramatically in the last four years.
Every week, people travelling from the outer Islands to Alotau and back are faced with this threat.
However, they have no other choice because sea transport is the only mode of transport from the islands to the mainland, even though Esa’ala MP Davis Steven is the Civil Aviation Minister.
All five MPs from Milne Bay (three them ministers Charles Abel – National Planning and Monitoring, Davis Steven – Civil Aviation and Douglas Tomuriesa – Forestry) were in Government until the recent defection of the Governor to the Opposition benches.
According to the report, Milne Bay PPC, Chief Supt Joseph Morehari said that piracy was frequent in the maritime province and police were cash-strapped to fix up the mv Wagambie.
He further stated: “My plea for K400,000 to Milne Bay Governor Titus Philemon, Alotau MP Charles Abel and Esa’ala MP Steven Davis have fallen on deaf ears.”
My good MPs, you have failed your people miserably.
The clock is ticking, shape up or shift out!
