PJV continues to support organisations with diesel, generators

THE Porgera Joint Venture (PJV) has been providing diesel and generators to maintain electricity for important organisations in the community since March.
This was due to damage caused to the power station in Hides, Hela, that supplies electricity to the mining town, by the Feb 26 earthquake.
PJV donated 28,800 litres of diesel to organisations and institutions at a value of K76,000, excluding logistic costs.
It also provided, for temporary use, 11 portable 3kVA generators with 25m power cords to a number of critical service providers, including the Paiam Police Station.
The mining company will continue to provide the relief assistance until such time electricity was restored.
Annually, PJV supplies about 4MW electricity free of charge to Porgera Valley, which amounts to an estimated US$2.5 million (K8.2 million).
Company’s manager for corporate social responsibility operations and governance Graeme Nielsen said the assistance was to ensure critical services continued to operate.
“While the Porgera community didn’t receive any significant damage, they are without power and will be for the foreseeable future,” he said. “Our efforts have focused on acquiring portable generators and fuel to ensure critical services such as schools, medical facilities and bank are able to continue operating.”
Bank South Pacific branch at Paiam station and the Porgera District Hospital receives fuel fortnightly — 1000 litres for Bank South Pacific and 2000 litres for the hospital.
The assistance also includes schools that were receiving 200 litres of fuel monthly.
The schools include Paiam Primary, Paiam International, Paiam Secondary, Porgera Lutheran Primary and Porgera Technical and Vocational Education Training Centre.
