Plan focus on crime, mine leases

 THE Lagaip-Porgera electorate has launched its five-year development plan focusing mostly on reduce criminal activities, improving infrastructure and resettling special mining lease landowners.

The plan released by MP Nixon Mangape includes the renovation to the district headquarters, implementing a long term sustainable development plan relating to the resettlement of the special mining lease landowners, sustaining livelihood, rehabilitating the environment and developing the Porgera town.

Copies of the plan were distributed to development partners and stakeholders, including Barrick (Niugini) Ltd.

Mangape said in the plan that the electorate hosted the Porgera Gold Mine which since 1990, had been contributing significant revenue and financial benefits to the national economy.

Barrick (Niugini) Ltd owns 95% of the Porgera Joint Venture and is the managing operator of the Porgera Gold Mine in Enga where 92% of the workforce is Papua New Guinean.
