TENT City Baptist Primary School in Lae took part in planting about 20 trees around the school to commemorate the International Day of Forests on Thursday.
PNG Forest Research Institute (PNGFI) forester Agnes Sumareke said the day was celebrated every year on March 21, to commemorate the importance of forests and trees.
“Forests are like the lungs of the Earth,” she said.
“If we don’t look after the trees and environment around us, it’s like we are spoiling the beauty of the earth.”
Sumareke highlighted that when visiting schools, they did not only commemorate the day with the students but also did awareness on the importance of forests.
“The theme for the day is forest and health,” she said.
“Healthy forests are important for all aspects of a healthy planet, from livelihoods and nutrition to biodiversity and the environment.
“We have to give something back to the forest and that is to take care of the trees, and not only taking everything from them.”
School administrator Ps Michael Saka acknowledged PNGFRI for commemorating the day with the students as well as sharing vital information regarding the environment.
