THE Central Dabaris over the weekend announced its club awards for the Digicel Cup season with youngster Whallen Tau Loi and SP Hunter Gairo Kapana named the rookie and player of the season respectively.
Dabaris manager Hubert Warupi told The National yesterday that the awards were introduced to recognise the performances of players who had performed beyond expectation this season.
“Whallen Tau Loi proved to be the team’s most impressive find for the club,” he said.
“He played out of his skin in every game and showed that he can mix it with some of the best in the competition in his rookie season,” he said.
“The awards criteria also included their performances on the field and importantly their behaviour off the field.
“Makara Hura and Rex Kaupa claimed the Dabaris best back and best forward awards respectively.
“Rex, Makara and Gairo were absolutely outstanding on that left edge which proved to be the team’s most lethal combination, contributing 16 tries towards this year’s campaign.
“Makara who also was named the top try scorer bagged eight tries in the season, making him one of the competition’s most prolific try-scoring machines.
“Most improved player Ase Gima showed to the club his position as a quiet achiever.
“The club man award went to old hand David Loko for his role in mentoring the younger players and showing a team-first attitude.”
Meanwhile, Warupi said the Dabaris Rugby League Nines Carnival received a timely boost from Central Governor Robert Agarobe and the provincial government with a K30,000 financial assistance towards the cash prizes for the inaugural tournament.
