MEMBERS of a delegation from the Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) who visited a Taiwanese hospital recently say they had gained valuable insight into to how healthcare at Papua New Guinea’s largest hospital could be improved.
They stressed the need for specialised healthcare and for effective referral services.
Dr Kone Sobe, the director of medical services at PMGH said: “Our visit to Chang Hua Christian hospital (CCH) has given us exposure that there is a world class facility out there that has accreditation from world renowned accreditation board.”
When speaking about the medical referral services collaboration that CCH had with PMGH Dr Sobe added: “We are confident that our patients (from PMGH) can have the peace of mind with the support that CCH provides.”
Dr Richard Kanawi Kulau, from PMGH, said: “Quite notable were programmes like cancer screening, hypertension, occupational therapy, among others.
“This facility is very high-tech and maintains high standards.
“I was particularly amazed at the technology and the setup for the clinical examination for the candidates.”
He added that, “the health information system is something that will alleviate a lot of duplication of tasks in our hospital at least, if not our country, it would be a major cost and time saver, proving to be more efficient.”
“With the CCH providing continued opportunity for doctors at PMGH to receive specialist training and with the referral service for PNG patients, this will benefit both our countries and strengthen our relationship and competence to more universally accepted levels, long term,” Dr Kulau said.
