THE Port Moresby General Hospital’s (PMGH) implementation plan was revealed by chief executive officer Dr Paki Molumi on Friday.
Molumi said the important activities in the plan would be to prepare policies, guidelines and protocols and the focus would be on strengthening clinical governance.
“The gaps between what is currently available and what is
expected as a level-six hospital have been identified and are part of the plan for implementation,” he said.
He highlighted the following as key clinical governance activities that would be implemented in 2024:

  • IMPLEMENTATION of each division work plan to address the gaps identified in the gap analysis studies; and,
  • ESTABLISHMENT of an independent death committee.
“All deaths at PMGH will be audited and preventable deaths audited in detailed by an independent committee whose main objective is to reduce deficiency and help reduce preventable deaths,” he said.
  • ESTABLISHMENT of a specialist service and training office to accredit all training through
    submission of lock books.

“This is to ensure minimum standards are met to be a specialist or sub-specialist at this premier institution,” Molumi said.
“PMGH will work closely with the Medical Board of PNG to ensure that specialists have the minimum requirements to be registered.”

  • ESTABLISHMENT of stimulation laboratories and training rooms to improve training and clinical skills.

“The Laloki training facility will be improved to a stimulation training facility,” Molumi said.

  • STRENGTHEN the ethics and research committee to promote clinical research and audits for PMGH.
Molumi said strengthening of the corporate governance was one of the few hospital’s achievement on its previous plan.

He said the plan had input from all stakeholders on what they wanted the hospital to be like as a level-six national teaching and referral hospital.
“We have assessed where we are, where we want to go and how we are going to get there and that is captured in the corporate plan 2022 to 2024,” he said.
He added that the plan was developed after the National Health Plan was launched.
He reminded staff not forget that their core business would always be quality patient care and treatment.
