THE Port Moresby Soccer Association (PMSA) has deferred the start of its 2021 season as a mark of respect for the late Sir Michael Somare, the founding father of Papua New Guinea.
President Joseph Ealedona sent PMSA’s condolences to Lady Veronica, her children and grandchildren and the people of East Sepik.
“The pre-season was expected to start this weekend,” he said in a statement.
“However, our pre-season now kicks off next Saturday after the burial of our Grand Chief which scheduled for next Friday.
“The season starts on May 1 and ends in the first week of October.”
Ealedona said the finals format would be re-introduced in all divisions.
He said women’s football would run independently from the men’s competition, meaning a women’s team would not need to be attached to a men’s club in order to register.
Ealedona said pre-season registration was open to only PMSA clubs.
He urged all clubs to prepare well for the season and the deadline for payment of the K200 pre-season fee and club registration fee was on Monday.
Ealedona said the deadline for the season payment was on April 23.
“We are giving enough time and I urge all club managements to ensure full payment by the deadline to avoid unnecessary inconveniences during the season,” he said.
Ealedona said the Charity Cup would be held during the Easter weekend while discussions were underway with the Lae Football Association for the re-introduction of the inter-city clash during the Independence weekend.
