THE Port Moresby Soccer Association (PMSA) ended its Youth Challenge tournament on Sunday with joint winners declared in the men’s and women’s divisions.
The two-week tournament ended with finalists Keleiruna and Yamaros as winners in the men’s division because of limited time forcing a no-contest in the men’s final.
The women’s final ended in a scoreless draw with organisers declaring finalists Maiden and Strikers as joint winners.
Association general secretary George Bukoya told The National on Monday that the tournament was an initiative of Southern Strikers with a K20,000 sponsorship to run the games.
“Strikers wanted to host a tournament to scout players and enable other National Soccer League teams to look at potential players,” he said.
“The association agreed with the proposal.
“We used this tournament as our pre-season for the year.
“The aim of this tournament was to rekindle interest in the game that had been affected by the country’s Coronavirus (Covid-19) restrictions.
“The Covid-19 had affected the competition for two years straight and we wanted to bring back interest in the game.
“I think this tournament has achieved that.
“Our players are back on the field and the excitement is back.
“That’s what we wanted to see for the past two weekends.”
Bukoya said the association would resume the 2021 season this weekend.
