THE national boxing team has been trimmed from 11 boxers to seven as they prepare for the July 28-Aug 8 Commonwealth Games which will be held in Birmingham, England.
National coach Mark Keto told The National yesterday that his boxers would focus on improving their footwork and speed over the remaining weeks.
“Previously, we had 11 boxers in our team,” he said.
“But we had to release four of them because we needed to trim the team.
“Our preparations have been going smooth so far with a focus on footwork and speed.
“We want to improve our attack, so the boxers are doing it tough in training.
“There are a few areas that we need to improve on, but the main thing is fitness.
“Our fitness level is not up to the standard that we require, so we are focusing on that too.
“But I am confident that we will be ready for the Commonwealth Games.”
Keto said their training was better compared with those of previous years due to access to facilities.
“I would like to thank the PNG Sports Foundation and chief executive Albert Veratau for allocating a gym just for the national boxing team,” Keto said.
“In the past, the team didn’t have a proper gym, but the foundation has helped us and we have our own gym to train in now.
“I believe that such support will help us prepare well for international events such the Commonwealth Games and Pacific Games.”
Meanwhile, Keto said he could not confirm how many boxers would travel to Birmingham in July.
