PAPUA New Guinea can produce talent capable of matching other Pacific Islands nations in rugby 15s, says Queensland Rugby Union referee Luke Maloney.
“I can say that they (Pacific Nations) really need to start watching their back because PNG is going to be a real force in the future,” Maloney said on Saturday. “There’s some real talent in PNG who just haven’t been identified yet so it’s a really exciting time for rugby in the country.”
Maloney, who is part of the Queensland Rugby Union Referees’ Association (QRRA), was in Port Moresby last week to control the Capital Rugby Union premier men’s grand final on Saturday.
In his first trip to PNG, Maloney was impressed with the quality of rugby displayed in the showdown between Brothers and the Harlequins. The Brothers won 26-14.
“It’s my first opportunity to come up to PNG,” he said.
“There’s real passion among PNG people.
“The crowds are fantastic.
“Both teams played really well today and played with a lot of heart. It’s great to see rugby is alive and well in PNG.
“Both teams played to a high standard which is positive.”
