A School Screening project is currently underway in primary schools to identify students with eye problems and educate them about eye-care.
The project is an initiative of PNG Eye Care and is funded by the US embassy.
PNG Eye Care is a non-government organisation funded by the Brien Holden Vision Institute in Sydney, Australia.
General manager of the PNG Eye Care Drew Keys said the project was a good initiative because not a lot of school screening was done for health issues in Papua New Guinea.
“It is not only about finding out which children have eye problems but it is also about teaching them that if they do have eye problems, it can be fixed,” he said.
“As people get older, they start losing their sight.
“They do not know that they can get their eyes fixed by wearing glasses or have an eye operation to fix their eye sight.
“Educating children at a young age allows them to know what to do when they get older,” Keys said.
