THE PNG Sports Foundation under its one-off principle programme will hold a workshop involving community development officers and Team New Ireland technical officials this week in Kavieng.
The programme is expected to attract 30 CDOs and all the technical officials attending this year’s PNG Games in Kokopo in November.
The programme has been organised in two parts.
Firstly, the participants will go through a range of topics in sports administration and the second part will expose them to a case study.
The study will look at what the New Ireland technical officials have done in the last PNG Games in 2009.
The case study segment will give the participants an insight into noticing the weaknesses they have encountered in the previous national games.
This will again highlight their problem areas and pave the way to improving their weaknesses. The bottom line is to prepare them well for the coming Games.
The program manager, Scott Vavine emphasized that since the inception of the Games in 2003; almost all the provinces have not learnt from their lessons and have been doing the same mistakes to date.
Vavine said, “I am surprised that the provinces have not carefully analyzed their own mistakes from the previous Games they have attended.”

This shows one thing and that is authorities do not take this seriously and cautiously work on their problems to better their preparations for the next Games. If they are doing the mistake over and over again, obviously the problems they faced are not attended to.
This training program will definitely give them knowledge and skills to do that. It greatly empowers them to better organize themselves based on the weaknesses they have faced in the last Games.
The sports administration sessions will up skill them. At least they have knowledge and skills of managing their own affairs. This means that they will be confident and proficient in their community sports organizations. When they have gained the knowledge it will empower them to do anything meaning solving their own problems and there is continuity in their community sports.
The PNG Sports Foundation’s regional officers, Ford Sahembo and Allan Joseph will be part and parcel of the program. The duo has a responsibility over the provinces in the region and such training also empowers them to assist their fellow officers to be efficient in carrying out sports work in their respective provinces.
