PNG half weighing UK return

PAPUA New Guinea halfback Watson Boas says he is weighing up whether to return to the United Kingdom (UK) next season to complete his two-year rugby league deal with Doncaster.
The third-tier English side had granted the 25-year-old time off earlier in the year due to personal reasons but he joined the Rabaul Gurias after Covid-19 had complicated his return to the UK.
Despite having a year left on his Doncaster contract, it is understood that the club has allowed Boas to play for the Gurias following the cancellation of the third-tier English season due to the pandemic.
“I will make a decision in December on whether to remain in PNG or return to Doncaster,” the former SP Hunter told The National yesterday.
“But I am still in contact with Doncaster.
“Family comes first so I will make a decision in their interests.”
Boas said if he decided to remain in PNG, he would re-join the Hunters under coach Matthew Church.
“That is the most obvious option,” he said.
“But December is still a couple of months away so I have a lot of time to think things through.
“My focus now is to play consistent football for the Gurias as we look to claim the first spot in the Oct 18 Digicel Cup grand final in Port Moresby.
“All in all, I am satisfied with my game so far but there is always room for improvement.
“We are into the finals now so I’m hopeful of leading my men well as we try to repeat our 2015 title-winning run.”

  • I am happy when Papua New Guineans secure sports contracts to play overseas and one such sport is Rugby League. But please consider all things, family, wife, children, girlfriend, boyfriend, pig, dog, garden, etc…. before you put pen to paper to go play overseas. If conditions doesn’t suit you, please decline politely. We tired of people going overseas for two, three or six months and return back to PNG because of personal/family issues. Spoiling the chances of upcoming players who might be overlooked in this opportunity. Maybe one criteria overseas selectors should consider is being a SINGLE athlete.

  • I would agree with Oliver, as this is becoming a norm amongst PNG grown players. The standard is so high in this game and with the opportunity it comes with, it leaves a footpath for those that are coming up the ranks. Let’s not be selfish, employ a manager who can really negotiate on all terms and conditions so that a precedence is set. Sick and tired of hearing players admired for their game who are unable to complete their contracts.

  • I also agree with Oliver’s comment because the more players do that, it will create a trend that will surely set a very bad record for future upcoming players who might be considered for overseas contracts.
