Papua New Guinea Lewas’ Brenda Tau and Vicky Ara’a are continuing their good form for the Ipswich Hornets in the Brisbane women’s first-grade competition, the Catherine Raymont Shield.
Following their standout performance in the Australian Country Cricket Championships in Victoria in January, the duo went back to play for the Hornets after Christmas — thanks to the Port Moresby RSL scholarship funding.
Tau kicked off her campaign with a wonderful innings, opening the batting she finished with a stylish 60 not out off 54 balls while Ara’a chimed in with 17 off 14 balls to close the innings.
The win allowed the Hornets to progress to the finals of the T20 competition.
Unfortunately, they were eliminated in the final but Ara’a still shone with an unbeaten 34 of 39 balls.
They both carried their good performances through to the 50-over competition with Ara’a scoring 50 and effecting two direct hit run-outs in that round.
Coach Wayne Bichel said: “Vicky set such an example to our young players, her enthusiasm with the bat, ball and fielding set a high tone for the team.
“In the next round, Brenda figured in a 54-run unbeaten partnership to win the game for the Hornets, scoring 38 of those runs off just 40 balls.
“Both girls have been outstanding across the whole season.”
Both players will return to Port Moresby next week to join the Lewas in preparation for their ICC World T20 and 50-over World Cup qualifiers to be played in Vanuatu from May 6-11.
