PNG picking up slowly

TEAM PNG continued to pick up a few surprises at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, when squash and bowling scored some remarkable wins against their opponents in the second day of competition.
PNG women squash champion Barbara Stubbings thrashed her Kenyan opponent Niinji Khaaliqa 3-0 to advance into the plate finals of the squash tournament.
However, the results for squash singles match between Michael Rucklinger and Bruce Burrows of Jamaica were not available at press time.
The result of PNG’s first boxing match between Michael Peter and Nisa Khan of Pakistan was also not available  (see separate story).
Athletics will start  today while PNG Pepes will meet South Africa today at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex, when the third day of competition starts.  There was a mixed bag of results in bowling for PNG.
The PNG triple women’s team are the only team so far to score two wins in their matches on day one of the competition.
They drew with Cook Islands 1-1 after going down to Malaysia 1-0.
The men’s pairs beat Botswana 1-0 but lost to Scotland with the same scoreline.
Attempts to contact bowling team manager Kiliwi Nabo were unsuccessful last night.
